The origin of the miniature roses lies in
China. Their growth which is similar to
bonsai was due to their living con-
ditions there. Probably this was the
only way to survive, they are very
winter-hardy too. From the Isle of
Mauritius the miniature rose came
to England in the year 1810. There
she was normally planted in pots
and only kept indoors.
Just as one may marvel at the perfectly developed
hands of a new born baby , one will look at the noble
beauty of the minuscule dwarf flowers. Not only the flowers
are small, the foliage is minuscule too: the smallest leaves
are only 1 cm wide and 2 cm long. Growth habit is wide bushy
to open and erect, and only seldom they will be higher than
30 cm. To compare these delicate bushes to Hybrid Tea roses
is like comparing pralines to cakes. Miniature roses should get enough sun and therefore be planted far enough from vigorous neighbours. We appreciate most their beauty planted in tubs or wide balcony boxes directly in front of us. They can flower continuously during several months when they are regularly watered and fertilised.
Planting information:
Follow the general rule: 12 plants per square meter, which is a planting distance of 25 cm. More precisely: height = distance. Thus for a bed of ‘Rosmarin 89’ you would need 10-12 plants, from the more vigorous ‘Amulett’ only 8 plants per square meter.
